The Queensland University (UQ) Haiti has recently launched a research institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Sustainable Development in Haiti.

Haiti: The Queensland University (UQ), in line with the National Innovation and Artificial Intelligence Strategy launched by the Queensland University Council in late 2024 and the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Digital Agenda, is collaborating with the Haitian-Mexican Union of Small Farmers, Ranchers, and Sustainable Development (UNHAMEXPAGRI) Mexico, and the Hispagnola Academy of Sciences of Haiti (HASH) to establish the Agri-Food Biosystems Research Institute (AFBRI) and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Institute for Research on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development (IRAISD)within the Queensland University (UQ).

This alliance will address the scientific, technological, and socio-economic objectives necessary for the development of projects that promote advances in organic research and production at the national level, in line with the vision of the aforementioned agendas. More specifically, thanks to the new IIBA institute, Haiti's rural areas will be strengthened through the bioeconomy. This approach will enable these areas to be managed sustainably to ensure the macroeconomic profitability of the agri-food sector and social growth through digital outreach.

Using applied research techniques, Agriculture 4.0 will also be developed for agri-food biosystems, drawing on the principles of agroecology, a science that applies ecological concepts to achieve dual sustainability.
From a socioeconomic perspective, the strategy aims to improve the food security and nutritional health of the Haitian population, particularly for the most internationally sought-after products, which constitute the staple diet of local residents and tourists.

Furthermore, this project will create new jobs for the new rural environment, in line with the vision of sustainability. At the same time, young Haitian producers, equipped with this modern knowledge, will be able to earn a decent living and thus avoid migrating to Haiti's urban areas. This project is already taking shape through research on the agro-ecological transition at the Queensland University (UQ) Mini-Campus Grand' Anse, Dame-Marie, Jérémie, and very soon in the south, Camp-Perrin, the Dame-Marie, Jérémie region, one of the largest organic cocoa producers in Haiti. In March 2024, the UNHAMEXPAGRI organization signed an agreement with UQ for the university to provide scientific, educational and technological support to Haitian cocoa farmers engaged in an agro-ecological transition of their farms specifically in the Dame-Marie, Jeremie region. This will help increase the productivity of cocoa and chocolate production nationally, in an even healthier way in the Dame-Marie, Jeremie region.

The Queensland University (UQ), with its team of researchers, is working not only on the project to create a research institute, but also on the creation of the faculties of science and engineering, the doctoral schools that have been in existence for years, and the TECUQ research center. All of this involves a new academic offering and corresponding research areas, which will be developed within the framework of this strategic alliance, in the areas of undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs at the Queensland University (UQ).

We are willing to establish cooperative relationships with international institutions interested in developing AI activities with us in Haiti.

L'Université Queensland (UQ) Haïti vient de travailler sur la création d'un Institut de Recherche sur l'Intelligence Artificielle (IA) et le développement durable en Haiti.

Haïti : L'Université Queensland (UQ), conformément à la Stratégie nationale d'innovation et d'intelligence artificielle lancée par le conseil d'université Queensland fin 2024 et aux Objectifs de développement durable de l'Agenda numérique 2030, collabore avec Union Haitiano-Mexicain de Pequenos Agricultores, Ganaderos y Desarrollo Sostenible (UNHAMEXPAGRI) et Hispagnola Academy of Sciences of Haiti (HASH) pour créer l'Institut de recherche sur les biosystèmes agroalimentaires (IIBA) et Institut de Recherche sur l'Intelligence Artificielle (IA) et le développement durable (IRIADD) au sein du Campus de Queensland University (UQ).

Cette alliance abordera les objectifs scientifiques, technologiques et socio-économiques nécessaires au développement de projets favorisant les avancées de la recherche et de la production biologique à l'échelle nationale, conformément à la vision des agendas susmentionnés.

Plus précisément, grâce au nouvel institut IIBA, les zones rurales d’Haiti seront renforcées grâce à la bioéconomie. Cette approche permettra de gérer ces zones de manière durable afin d'assurer la rentabilité macroéconomique du secteur agroalimentaire et la croissance sociale, grâce à la vulgarisation numérique.
Grâce aux techniques de recherche appliquée, l'Agriculture 4.0 sera également développée pour les biosystèmes agroalimentaires, en s'appuyant sur les principes de l'agroécologie, science qui applique des concepts écologiques pour atteindre une double durabilité.

D'un point de vue socio-économique, la stratégie vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire et la santé nutritionnelle de la population haïtienne, notamment pour les produits les plus demandés au niveau international, qui constituent la base alimentaire des résidents locaux et des touristes.

De plus, ce projet créera de nouveaux emplois pour le nouvel environnement rural, en phase avec la vision de la durabilité. Parallèlement, les jeunes producteurs haïtiens, dotés de ces connaissances modernes, pourront vivre convenablement et éviter ainsi de migrer vers les zones urbaines d'Haïti.

Ce projet se concrétise déjà par les recherches menées sur la transition agroécologique dans le Mini-Campus de l'Université Queensland (UQ) Grand' Anse, Dame-Marie, Jérémie , et très bientôt dans le sud, Camp-Perrin,la région de Dame-Marie, Jérémie l'un des plus grands producteurs de cacao biologique d'Haïti. En mars 2024, l'organisation UNHAMEXPAGRI a signé un accord avec l'UQ afin que l'université fournisse un soutien scientifique, pédagogique et technologique aux cacaoculteurs haïtiens engagés dans une transition agroécologique de leurs exploitations spécifiquement dans la région de Dame-Marie, Jeremie. Cela contribuera à accroître la productivité de la production de cacao et de chocolat à l'échelle nationale, de manière encore plus saine dans la région de Dame-Marie, Jeremie.

L'Université Queensland (UQ), avec son équipe de chercheurs, travaille non seulement sur le projet de création d'un institut de recherche, mais aussi sur la création des facultés de sciences et d'ingénierie, des écoles doctorales qui ont déjà créée depuis des années et du centre de recherche TECUQ. Tout cela implique une nouvelle offre académique et des axes de recherche correspondants, qui seront développés dans le cadre de cette alliance stratégique, dans les domaines des programmes de licence, de master, de doctorat et de postdoctorat au sein de l'Université Queensland (UQ).

Nous sommes disposés à établir des liens de coopération avec des institutions internationales s'intéressant à développer des activités en IA avec nous en Haïti.
